Thursday, Apr 17th 9:31pmMultiple homes in various stages of construction dot the more than 700 acres Southern Land Company -- a company that has completed or is in the process of developing 17 communities with a total investment value of $1.7 billion -- has procured on Hwy 380 just east of Stonebridge Dr. SLC calls the development Tucker Hill and come Saturday, several homes will be open for public viewing.

Spring Market, an outdoor festival offering breakfast and lunch, painting for the kids, spring time plant and flower sales, and horticulture demonstrations, is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. About 125 free five-gallon trees will be given away to early arrivals.

“Basically, the festival is an opportunity to unveil three model homes,” said Jim Cheney, a representative of Tucker Hill. “This isn’t a publicity stunt; this is something that happens twice a year in all our communities. If you were to move to Tucker Hill these are the types of open air activities you’d have during the good weather season.”

Sidewalks, parks, and open spaces. Large porches and abundant horticulture. Swimming pools, fishing ponds, playgrounds and hike and bike paths. Tucker Hill’s got them all.

The development is about building community, Cheney said. It’s not just bricks and mortar assembled into meaningless, virtually identical cookie-cutter boxes euphemistically known as homes.

Tucker Hill’s buildout is scheduled for 2,100 homes featuring “neo-traditional” architecture -- American four-square, Italian Renaissance, English Tudor, Spanish eclectic and French eclectic, and Victorian – priced from the mid-$300s to more $1 million.

If you’re a fan of gangly garage doors on prominent display or homes with nary a distinctive quality between them, Tucker Hill may not be your aesthetic cup of tea.

“We’re really trying to move away from garage doors out in front,” said Kathy Cunningham, vice president for community development for SLC. “That’s probably the most important [issue].

Flagstone Custom Homes, Tim Jackson Custom Homes, Darling Homes, and SLC Homes are building homes at Tucker Hill.
